Introduction
Luqaimat is one of the most cherished traditional desserts of the United Arab Emirates. These small, golden, deep-fried dough balls may look simple, but they deliver a delightful contrast of textures—crispy on the outside and soft, fluffy, and warm on the inside. Finished with a generous drizzle of date syrup or honey, Luqaimat is comforting, indulgent, and deeply satisfying.
In Emirati culture, Luqaimat is more than just a dessert. It is closely tied to family gatherings, Ramadan evenings, and festive occasions. Freshly made and shared among loved ones, it represents warmth, generosity, and togetherness.
What Makes Luqaimat Special
What truly sets Luqaimat apart is its simplicity paired with perfect execution. Made using basic pantry ingredients, the magic lies in the fermentation of the dough and the frying technique. When done right, Luqaimat puffs up beautifully, creating a light interior that melts in the mouth.
The finishing touch—date syrup—connects the dessert to the region’s heritage. Dates have long been a staple in Emirati life, and pairing them with Luqaimat gives the dish both cultural and emotional significance.
Ingredients Used in Luqaimat
Flour
All-purpose flour forms the base of Luqaimat and provides structure to the dough.
Yeast
Yeast is responsible for the airy and soft texture inside each bite.
Using fresh yeast ensures proper rising and a light result.
Sugar
A small amount of sugar activates the yeast and adds subtle sweetness to the dough.
Milk or Water
This helps bind the ingredients and creates a thick, sticky batter rather than a firm dough.
Cardamom or Saffron (Optional)
These ingredients add a gentle aroma and elevate the flavor without overpowering the dessert.
Date Syrup or Honey
Date syrup (dibs) is the traditional topping, while honey is a popular alternative. Slightly warming the syrup helps it coat the Luqaimat evenly.
How to Make Luqaimat
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Combine flour, yeast, sugar, and optional spices in a bowl. Gradually add warm milk or water and mix until a thick, sticky batter forms. Cover and let it rest in a warm place until doubled in size.
Step 2: Heat the Oil
Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. The oil should be hot but not smoking. A small drop of batter should rise slowly with bubbles.
Step 3: Fry the Luqaimat
Carefully drop small portions of batter into the oil using a spoon or your fingers. Fry until evenly golden, turning gently to cook all sides.
Step 4: Drain and Sweeten
Remove the Luqaimat and drain briefly on paper towels. While still hot, drizzle generously with date syrup or honey.
Step 5: Serve
Serve Luqaimat warm for the best texture and flavor.
Tips for Perfect Luqaimat
Allow enough resting time for the dough to rise properly.
Maintain medium heat to cook the inside without burning the outside.
Fry in small batches to keep oil temperature stable.
Always serve fresh for the best experience.
What to Serve with Luqaimat
Luqaimat pairs beautifully with traditional Arabic coffee (gahwa), mint tea, or fresh dates. These simple accompaniments balance the sweetness and enhance the overall experience.
Luqaimat captures the heart of Emirati desserts—simple, comforting, and rich in tradition. With its golden crunch and soft center, it continues to bring joy to homes across the UAE, one warm bite at a time.
