Greece, with its breathtaking blues, postcard-perfect vistas, and sunsets straight out of a Disney fairytale, is a dream destination for many. The proud and warm Greek people, resilient after recent economic challenges, eagerly welcome millions of visitors annually, offering genuine hospitality to guests from all cultures.

While Greece's 3,000 islands are delightful year-round, summer truly offers the quintessential Greek experience. Athens is ideal for diving into mythology, but for authentic culture, stunning beauty, and lively action – think parties, cave hotels, sunset cruises, and yacht picnics – the islands are your go-to. Most Indians gravitate towards Mykonos and Santorini, but as I discovered on my six-day adventure with two wonderful Greeks, there's a whole world of even prettier, uniquely charming islands waiting to be explored! This guide provides insights straight from the source to help you plan your perfect Greek escape.
When to Visit Greece
Summer is undoubtedly prime time for that classic Greek experience. Picture yourself on Santorini's beautiful beaches or soaking up Mykonos's famous party scene, bustling with millions of visitors. Be aware, however, that some islands, like Mykonos, transform from jam-packed to deserted in the off-season, as locals often close shop and travel themselves.

Don't rule out Greece in winter! It's a vibrant, colorful country even then. Consider a skiing trip to the mountains or explore stunning winter islands like Hydra (car-free and charming) and Crete, one of Greece's largest and most beautiful islands.
Reaching the Greek Islands
From Athens, the most popular islands are accessible by ferries or flights. Greek ferries are like mini-cruise ships, offering comfortable seating, Wi-Fi (for purchase), cabins (additional cost, accommodating four), cafes, restaurants, and vehicle storage.

You'll find two types:
Regular/Slow Ferries: These take about 7 hours from Athens to Santorini, stopping at 2-3 islands. They feature outdoor decks – perfect for fresh air and ocean views.
Fast Ferries: Quicker by 1-2 hours (5 hours to Santorini), but lack outdoor decks, so you'll enjoy ocean views from large glass windows
Where to stay in Greece
Athens: Surprisingly, the city center isn't always best. Plaka, while central, is a walking street with no porters, making luggage challenging. Hotels a 10-minute taxi/bus ride away (around 5 euros) are often better value. Chain hotels like Novotel offer decent breakfasts and convenient locations.
Santorini: For those iconic caldera views, Fira or Oia are ideal, though pricey. If you're open to exploring beyond the crowded tourist hotspots, Kamari Beach is a fantastic alternative. Many hotels, including some luxurious 4-star properties, are right on this black sand beach, surrounded by a lively market, cafes, and tavernas for authentic Greek food. For breathtaking ocean views, a sea-facing room in the Caldera region (expect an extra ~€30) is superb; Goulielmos is a highly recommended hotel.

Mykonos: As a party island, staying near a bus stop is key. The Paradise Beach Club is world-famous for its 24-hour parties and offers various room categories (beach cabins to apartments) to suit your budget. Alternatively, stay close to the main market, Chora, where sea-facing hotels like Harmony and San Marco offer beautiful interiors.
Local Transport in Greece
Athens: Functions like any European city with an efficient bus and metro system. Taxis are available and generally more affordable than in many other European capitals.

Greek Islands: Taxis are scarce and very expensive. The best options are buses or renting a car for flexibility. A smart tip: petrol prices vary between stations, so compare quickly to save money! In Santorini, donkeys can navigate the numerous steps (around €200!), while Hydra is a charming car-free island where donkeys or walking are the primary modes of transport. These delightful quirks add to Greece's unique charm!
A Feast for the Senses: What to Eat in Greece

Prepare your taste buds for an unforgettable culinary journey! While Greek cooking is delightfully simple, it's packed with flavor and inherently healthy. Beyond your usual salads, dive into authentic local dishes like Souvlaki, savory Spinach Pie, classic Gyros, and crisp Greek Salad served with warm Pita Bread. Don't be shy to try Taramosalata (a delicious fish roe dip), Fried Squid, or a hearty thick fish broth at a local taverna. And of course, no trip is complete without Moussaka! For dessert, indulge in Milopita (apple pie with cinnamon sugar) and Revani. Greeks often toss fresh veggies with olive oil and lemon, creating vibrant, healthy flavors that will make you rethink your definition of salad!
Navigating the Greek Economy: What Travelers Need to Know
Rest assured, Greece's economic situation hasn't dampened its vibrant tourism scene, and the country continues to welcome millions of visitors. However, be aware of a significant increase in tax (from 6% to 23%) on most goods and services.

While there might be some daily limits on cash withdrawals (€60/day, €420/week), you can easily manage by using credit cards for most transactions or carrying an adequate amount of cash. A crucial tip: avoid bringing €500 notes, as they are very difficult to break and often raise suspicion among locals who are accustomed to lower withdrawal limits. Sticking to smaller denominations also minimizes the risk of losing large sums.
Treasures to Take Home: Greek Souvenirs
When it comes to souvenirs, Greece offers a bounty of unique finds!
Olive Oil & Olives: Top of the list! Stock up on delicious local olives in various flavors and high-quality olive oil, available from street vendors to large stores.
Traditional Alcohol: Bring home Ouzo, a potent Greek spirit similar to Turkish Raki, traditionally enjoyed with plain water. It's a strong, distinctive addition to any home bar.
Greek Jewelry: Explore the unique styles of Greek jewelry, often inspired by ancient deities. While some pieces can be pricey, you'll find beautiful, affordable artificial counterparts perfect for daily wear. Plaka, Athens, is an excellent spot to hunt for these beauties.

Charming Souvenirs: Unlike many duty-free stores, Greece's local souvenir shops are truly exceptional. Skip the airport and explore shops while strolling through towns. You might discover hand-painted Santorini sunset artworks, adorable Mykonos-themed mason jars, or unique candles capturing the essence of Greece's iconic blue and white architecture. Make the most of these fantastic shops!
